Station Happenings

What Happened to 93.9 and 106.3?

Note from Maryland Media One's owner, Steve Clendenin:

As you may have heard while listening to 93.9 in Myrtle Beach and 106.3 in Wilmington that Carolina Gold is no longer. I have sold the radio station. All good things must come to an end.

Carolina Gold survived Covid, a down economy and losing our studios and offices in a fire. We were able to secure the position as the 3rd highest rated station in the market, only behind two monster country and rock stations that have been on the air for over 20 years. We fought to carve our existence in the market. We did a damn good job. We had a market exclusive format. Listeners loved us. I loved our listeners, staff and station.

However, in business, you have to evaluate what is right for your company. This was my choice to sell Carolina Gold and I had to make that choice around the holidays. I will look for another opportunity that is sustainable given the market dynamics, so you could hear Gold pop up on the FM band in Myrtle Beach again at some time.

Carolina Gold, however, is not dead. We will live on our national platform on the iHeart Radio App, and streaming live at www.carolinagold.net

Winter Home Prep Advice from ARS Rescue Rooter

American Residential Services (ARS/Rescue Rooter), the nation’s leading provider of HVAC and plumbing services, recently shared professional advice for homeowners looking to get ahead of the winter weather by preparing their home’s HVAC and plumbing.

As most of the country is experiencing colder weather, the home services company is urging homeowners to be proactive in their care for their homes so they can avoid emergency heating and plumbing repairs.

“As winter draws near, homeowners should pre-emptively maintain their heating and plumbing systems,” said Scott Boose, chief executive officer of ARS/Rescue Rooter. “This approach doesn't just help keep your home warm and comfortable, but it also minimizes the potential for expensive emergency repairs. Our experienced and knowledgeable professionals are ready to perform heater tune-ups and plumbing inspections to ensure our customers are prepared.”

To anticipate colder weather and freezing temperatures, homeowners should:

  1. Schedule a heating system tune-up. Whether you need a furnace tune-up or you have a heat pump system that could use looking over, getting a heating system tune-up is a great way to ensure you’re prepared for winter.

  1. Protect against frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your home. A professional plumber can help you insulate pipes so that they are less likely to freeze, as well as give you practical advice about winter weather precautions, such as sealing gaps or cracks in your exterior walls.

  1. Get attic insulation. Attic insulation can reduce the energy your heating system expends to heat up your home, which can, in turn, reduce the risk of breakdowns and the need for emergency service.

As the calendar year draws to a close, homeowners should also consider making upgrades to make their homes more energy efficient. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) may offer tax credits to some homeowners.

“The IRA presents opportunities for some to save money with tax credits,” said Joseph Hark, vice president of field operations at ARS. “Our sales team can help homeowners understand what equipment is eligible and work with them to upgrade the heating systems in their homes before the year ends.”

For a complete list of what equipment is eligible for tax credits, homeowners can check ARS’s website. ARS is not a licensed tax professional and cannot provide tax advice. Homeowners should consult with a tax advisor on eligibility for any tax credits.

For furnace maintenance and plumbing repairs, an ounce of prevention is certainly worth a pound of cure. Scheduling a visit with a professional HVAC technician or plumber during the milder autumn months can ensure that your family’s comfort and safety aren’t at risk during the colder weather months, when heating system breakdowns and emergency plumbing repairs are significantly more common.

For more information about your home’s HVAC and plumbing systems, visit the ARS/Rescue Rooter blog.

Win Three Dog Night Tickets

Returning to the Alabama Theatre, the legendary THREE DOG NIGHT. Now in its 5th decade, claims some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than THREE DOG NIGHT. THREE DOG NIGHT hits weave through the fabric of pop culture today, whether on the radio where they are heard day in and day out, in TV commercials or in major motion pictures -- songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)”, “Joy to the World”, “Black and White”, “Shambala” and “One” serve to heighten our emotions and crystallize THREE DOG NIGHT’s continuing popularity.

This Grammy-nominated band is not content resting on its legacy alone. Always working to expand its audience, THREE DOG NIGHT has embraced and been embraced by 21st century music technology.  New and existing fans buy THREE DOG NIGHT’s music on iTunes as well as at record stores.  In fact, releases from this decade alone have sold well over a million copies. THREE DOG NIGHT maintains an aggressive, year-round touring schedule of over 70 dates a year.   The hit filled concerts are performed for generation-spanning audiences by Danny Hutton (founder/lead vocalist) and Michael Allsup (guitar) with Paul Kingery (bass/vocals), Pat Bautz (drums),) David Morgan (vocals) and Howard Lavarea (keyboards).

The band’s now-famous name refers to native Australian hunters in the outback who huddled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights; the coldest being a “three dog night”. Now, marking 50 years on the road, THREE DOG NIGHT continues to grow its fan base by keeping up a full schedule of concerts at theatres, performing arts centers, fairs, festivals, corporate events, and casinos. Since 1986, the band has performed over 2,500 shows including two Super Bowls. You don’t want to miss this concert, April 29th 2023.

The Platters, The Drifters and the Coasters at the Alabama Theater

The Platters were one of the most successful vocal groups of the early rock and roll era with 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including four no.1 hits. Enjoy songs such as "The Great Pretender", "Twilight Time", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "My Prayer" and "Only You".

The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group that had a string of hits in the late 1950s. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo-wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo-wop legacy through the 1960s. They became known as the "Clown Princes of Rock N Roll" for their humorous rock and roll songs with a solid rhythm and blues underpinning. You'll hear their hits like "Yakety Yak", "Charlie Brown", "Searchin'" and "Young Blood".

SOS Spring Safari

Carolina Gold is proud to be a part of the SOS Spring Safari.

Check out the schedule of events here

Here is more information about the Spring Safari...

Each year at the end of April the coming of Spring is celebrated by thousands of shaggers from all along the east coast. They hit the road in search of wild life. Their destination is the famous little strip of sand known as the Grand Strand. After the long Winter, shaggers are eager for the first outing of the Summer. They find it at the SOS Spring Safari.

For 10 days the biggest adult party on the East Coast crashes into North Myrtle Beach like an ocean wave. A wide variety of activities is scheduled for the event. Many member clubs of the ACSC will schedule "tea parties" in the local lounges. The lounges themselves schedule special parties during the Safari. Popular bands show up along Main Street playing crowd favorites. Shag dance instructors will offer classes to the masses who are seeking to improve their skill or increase their repertoire of moves.

But the big attraction is the night life. As the sun goes down the animals of the Safari come out to play in the clubs along Main Street & OD. Old friends will seek each other out & new friends will be made. The night will be spent shag dancing to timeless music that moves the soul.

On the last Saturday of SOS everyone meets on Main Street for the perennial favorite parade of the year, the ACSC Club's Parade. ACSC member clubs plan, design, & build parade floats for fun & a chance to win one of the coveted awards. There are award categories for best shag theme & most original float. The Spring Safari Parade always draws a huge crowd. Not only will the shaggers be out in force, but the beach locals stream to the streets for an afternoon of fun & laughter!
